Texas journeyman eligibility and the one-year window

How you become eligible

TDLR's page says that after your completed license application has been reviewed and your application fee has been received, you are notified that you are approved to sit for the exam. The notice comes by email or regular mail, so make sure the contact details on your application are correct. PSI's bulletin adds that if you gave no email address, you receive a postcard with the scheduling instructions.

Neither TDLR's exam page nor the bulletin sets out the experience or training requirements for a journeyman license, so we do not list any here. Read those on TDLR's electrician license pages and your application, and treat TDLR as the authority on whether you qualify.

The one-year window

TDLR's wording is that applicants have one year from the date the application was received by TDLR to satisfy all requirements to obtain a license, including passing the examination. The window starts when TDLR receives the application, not when it approves you or when you book. A slow review uses up your time, so plan from the received date.

Inside the window the bulletin says you can test unlimited times through your eligibility period. TDLR adds that you may retake as many times as needed until you pass, and that each attempt may carry another exam fee. The fee is $78 for both portions and $78 for a retake of one or both, from the bulletin. Our cost and scheduling guide has the full picture.

Plan backward from the deadline

1. Find the date TDLR received your application.
2. Add one year and write it down.
3. Leave room for at least one retake. Each portion needs 70%, and the exam has two portions of 130 and 110 minutes.
4. Book early enough to cancel and reschedule if needed. PSI needs notice 2 days before the exam to keep your fee.

Before you book

• Name match. TDLR says your name must match exactly the information it has on file, and the ID you carry must match too. See the exam day guide.
• Language. English and Spanish exams are offered at no extra cost, and you choose when you schedule.
• Accommodations. Request them from PSI using the form the bulletin links.
• Questions. TDLR points candidates to PSI at (833) 333-4741 for questions about the bulletin.

Use the window to find your gaps

Take the free 10-question check to see your score by subject area before you pick a date. It needs no signup, and every answer is explained. The exam outline shows how the 80 scored items are spread.
