Texas journeyman exam cost, scheduling and retakes

The Texas journeyman electrician exam fee is $78 for both portions, and the retake fee is $78 if you fail one portion or both. That is from the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin for Texas electricians (updated 9/15/2026), which we read on 24 Oct 2026. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) sends you to that bulletin for its exam fees, so check PSI's current copy before you pay.

What the fee covers

ItemWhat the bulletin says
Exam fee, both portions$78
Retake of one portion or both$78
English or Spanish examNo additional cost; choose when you schedule
Other languagesTranslation on request, at a cost PSI quotes you

The two portions are NEC Knowledge (130 minutes) and Calculations (110 minutes). Each needs 70% to pass, and time left on the first does not carry into the second. TDLR says you may retake as many times as needed, and that further exam fees may apply with each attempt. The exam outline guide shows how the items split across subject areas.

How you get a date

TDLR contracts with PSI to deliver the exam. When TDLR approves your eligibility, you get an email with scheduling instructions, or a postcard if you gave no email address. The bulletin says you can test unlimited times through your eligibility period. You can book three ways:

  • Online. Create an account on PSI's registration site, search by city or postal code, pick a date and time, and pay. You then get a message confirming the test center, date and time. The first and last name on the account must match your government-issued ID exactly.
  • By phone. Call PSI at (833) 333-4741. You need a Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover card. The bulletin lists registrar hours as Monday to Friday, 6:30 am to 9:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Central Time.
  • By mail. Send the registration form from the bulletin with the fee. Payment can be a card, money order, company check or cashier's check made out to PSI. Cash and personal checks are not accepted, and the bulletin asks for 7 business days to process before you contact PSI to schedule.

Test locations

TDLR lists PSI locations in Abilene, Amarillo, Arlington, Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Harlingen, Houston, Lubbock, McAllen, Midland, San Antonio, Tyler and Waco. The bulletin gives each street address and directions, and lists more than one site in some cities.

Cancelling and rescheduling

You can cancel or reschedule without losing your fee if PSI receives notice at least 2 days before the exam date. For a Monday appointment, that means the previous Saturday. A voice mail or email does not count. Use PSI's website or speak to a representative by phone.

Your registration becomes invalid and you forfeit the fee if you:

  • Do not cancel 2 days ahead
  • Do not appear for your appointment
  • Arrive after the start time
  • Do not present proper identification

If severe weather or another emergency closes a site, PSI reschedules your exam and tries to contact you. You can check the status at (833) 333-4741.

Accommodations

PSI centers are equipped for access under the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you have a disability or would otherwise have difficulty testing, request alternative arrangements from PSI using the form the bulletin links. The exam day guide covers what happens once you arrive.

Time to pass

Fees are only part of the cost of waiting. TDLR gives you one year from the date it received your application to meet every requirement, including passing. See the eligibility guide.
