How to Tab Your 2026 NEC for the Texas Electrician Exam

An open-book exam only helps if you can find the right page in seconds. Your tabs are the fastest way to do that, and on the Texas journeyman exam you set them up at home, because you cannot mark or add anything once the session starts. This guide shows what to tab, how to label each tab, and a short drill that tells you whether your book is ready.

What the rules allow

PSI's Candidate Information Bulletin for Texas electricians (updated 9/15/2026) allows a soft-bound 2026 NEC. Highlighting, underlining and notes made before the exam are fine. Permanent index tabs are fine only if the NEC's publisher made them. Homemade or non-NEC tabs are not allowed, and neither is the NEC Handbook or extra paper stuck into the book. Our NEC book rules guide has the full list and what happens to a non-compliant book.

That means you cannot write your own label on a flag and stick it on the page edge. You work with the publisher's tab set and your own pen on the pages and the tabs the publisher supplies. Fit your system to that.

The tabs worth having

Start with the places that every Calculations question sends you. These are the same numbers our guides use, so confirm each one in your own 2026 book, since numbering can move between editions.

  • Chapter 9 tables. Table 1 for fill percentages, Table 4 for raceway dimensions, Table 5 for conductor areas and Table 8 for conductor properties. Our conduit fill guide uses the first three.
  • Table 310.16. Allowable ampacities, the starting point for most conductor sizing. The conductor ampacity guide shows the order of correction steps.
  • Table 250.66 and Table 250.122. The grounding electrode conductor and the equipment grounding conductor, kept apart on purpose.
  • Table 430.250, Table 430.248 and Table 430.52. Motor full-load current for three-phase and single-phase, and the protection table.
  • Table 314.16(A). Box volumes for box fill.
  • Article 100. Definitions, because many NEC Knowledge items turn on one defined term.
  • 240.6(A). The standard overcurrent device ratings you round up to.

We cite these by number only. Your book is the reference, and the tables are not reproduced here.

Mark the page, not just the tab

Tabs get you to the page. Your pen gets you to the line. On each tabbed page, highlight the table title and the column headers you use most. For Table 310.16, that might mean marking the temperature column headings so your eye lands on the right one first. Underline the section number of the rule you check every time, such as the terminal temperature limit that sits near 110.14(C). Notes in the margin are allowed before the exam, so write the step that comes next: "now apply correction, then adjustment".

Do not pack every page with color. A page where everything is highlighted is a page where nothing stands out. Pick one color for tables and one for rules you must not forget.

A lookup drill that tests your book

Take these five prompts and time each one, with your book closed until you start the clock:

  1. Where is the table for equipment grounding conductor size?
  2. Where do you find the area of one conductor of a given size?
  3. Where is the fill percentage for three conductors in a raceway?
  4. Where are standard overcurrent device ratings listed?
  5. Where is the table for single-phase motor current?

Answer by opening to the page and putting a finger on it. Anything over 20 seconds needs a better tab or a better mark. Repeat the drill every few days, and shuffle the order so you are not just remembering the sequence.

Practice with the same book

Use your tabbed 2026 NEC in every practice set from now on. Your hands learn the book the way your eyes learn the questions, and you find the tab that never helped before the exam instead of during it. Our free 10-question check is a good first test: open the book for each item and notice how long you spend finding the answer versus working it.

Two reading rules to mark inside the cover

The bulletin tells candidates not to consider code exceptions or optional calculation methods unless a question directs them to, and says all conductors are copper unless a question says otherwise. Write both on the inside cover. They are short, and they decide a surprising number of answers.
